Soully, sweaty ballsy. Superb Leery and sleazy horns underpinned by a appositely priapic bassline give this soulsy instrumental some added bite and vigor. They also act as a perfect lavish complement to the clavicord that chugs away relentlessly at the heart of this piece. It's a great instrument to pick - the lingua franca of funk -and lays a firm bedrock of swing.
The biggest compliment I can pay this is that, at fully 7:10 long, it outstays not a second of its welcome. How does it achieve this? Through the sheer ballsiness of the performance primarily - musicians enjoying themselves is an irresistable thing. But there are technical touches that keep the ears from slouching too: the descending drum fills that act as punctuation for each little segment of play, the alternating minor-chord cadence of the brass lines that add the merest hint of melancholy, and therefore intrigue.
Special notice must also go to the shrill keyboard line that massages its way into proceedings at 2:44. It ups the sweating intensity a of the track an extra notch or 6, giving the track the kick start it needs to keep it hurtling full throttle towards its conclusion. Heady stuff and the sound of the best party you never had
